Hard Water and Water Softeners Explained

Hard water is water with a high level of minerals that can cause problems for a household and the plumbing. So, removing these hard water minerals with a water softener installation can be beneficial. Here is a brief guide to water softeners to help homeowners who are dealing with irritating hard water issues.

Signs of Hard Water

dry hair Most homes in the U.S. have hard water, but if a homeowner is wondering if they have hard water, there are signs that can alert them. Here are some signs of hard water to look out for:

  • Dull hair and dry, itchy skin
  • Dishes are spotted and cloudy when they come out of the dishwasher
  • Clothing wears out and fades quickly
  • Crusty, white mineral scale appears on plumbing fixtures
  • The home has water pressure issues from scale buildup in pipes

How Does a Water Softener Work?

water softenerA water softener system works by removing the minerals in hard water, such as calcium and magnesium, from the water supply through a process called ion exchange. A water softener uses resin beads to capture these minerals and replace them with sodium ions.

Then, the softened water can flow throughout the house to the plumbing fixtures. The resin bed is then refreshed with sodium ions through a process called regeneration, where a brine solution enters from the brine tank to remove the hard water and refresh the resin with sodium ions. The brine solution and the hard water minerals are then flushed from the tank so the water-softening process can start again.

Benefits of a Whole-Home Water Softener

A water softener installation can provide numerous benefits for households and homeowners. It can help protect pipes and plumbing fixtures from scale buildup, which can cause clogs and water pressure issues, and reduce the time spent cleaning fixtures. A water softener also helps extend the lifespan of plumbing and appliances that use water, saving homeowners money on replacements and clothing, as clothes and laundry will not fade or wear out as quickly.

A water softener also helps make hair and skin feel softer and healthier, and dishes will come out of the dishwasher looking cleaner.  By investing in a water softener, homeowners can enjoy the benefits of soft water throughout their homes, including the savings it can provide.
